Updated Flickr to Flickrleech Greasemonkey Script
I published an update to my Greasemonkey script that places an appropriate link to Flickrleech on Flickr photo pages. Now the script will link to a Flickrleech thumbnail gallery of a person’s photos, a group photo pool, or all the photos with a given tag.
Modified PEZ Dispensers
ATYPYK has a whole series of funny products and “ideas” on their site. The modded PEZ dispensers are pretty clever. I also like their gallery of dollar bills.
Glassy Eyes: Blog and Info Hub for Ordering Glasses Online
Last year I saw a post on BoingBoing about the Glassy Eyes blog. Ira Mitchell took it upon himself to create a small clearinghouse for information about ordering glasses online. He discovered that you CAN order prescription glasses online and get a great product for a small fraction of what you normally pay in a store. Ira has purchased many pairs of glasses himself from several online merchants and offers you the results of his expereinces. He also set up a Flickr pool and Google group to allow people to share their own expereinces. I especially like how the Google group site has a page set up for each of the online vendors with reviews and comments from readers.
I purchased a pair of regular glasses and a pair of sunglasses from goggles4u.com. I have been really happy with the product I received and even made a less conservative selection of frames that I normally would have, because the price was so low. Folks offered a lot of compliments when I started wearing them ;o) Each pair of glasses was only $26 shipped!
If you wear glasses, you owe it to yourself to check out this resource. You can save a bundle.
Corn plastic and ethanol
I heard a story on NPR this morning about the record-setting crop of corn being harvested this year based on the boom in the ethanol industry.
I have my doubts that replacing our bad consumption habits based on petroleum with bad habits based on another raw material like corn will work out in the long run. For instance, how much energy goes into producing ethanol in the first place? What is the impact of farmers planting lots of land with corn instead of other crops? Of course, most of the corn grown for fuel is likely Roundup resistant Genetically Modified corn. What is going to happen to the corn we each as the GM corn invades the food supply?
The NPR story reminded me of an article on corn plastic that can replace some lower-temperature applications of petroleum plastic and is supposed to be “compostable”. Not quite.
ReForm School Moose

A store in LA called ReForm School sells flat-pack trophy heads from Vlaemsch design. I especially like the plywood moose. It seems like this is something you could mill yourself with a jigsaw and router. Hmm
